Newark DE #27 - Windy welcome
Thursday May 6 2021 10:00am
This was one of those days where you wanted to have a backup plan. A plan to play inside if the weather was not conducive to playing pickleball. While it was a cool morning, it wasn't the temperature that had us concerned, it was the wind. We arrived at Deacon's Walk Park in Newark DE a little before 9:00. No one was there. It was our understanding on days when the weather doesn't cooperate, they move play indoors at the Fraim Center for Active Adults. This was a 20 minute drive so we headed there. When we arrived no one was there to play, and then we were informed that play was scheduled for 11:00. We hung around a bit while they attempted to make contact with their pickleball peeps. At 9:30, we decided to head back to Deacon's Walk Park. We were delighted when we saw a couple players on the court, and were thrilled when they agreed to play a game with us. Thanks George for playing with us. By the time we were finished with our game other players were arriving which gave us the opportunity to mix in with them.
We also had the privilege of playing with Louise, Jack, Danny, Jim and Harry. Danny sure can cover the court.
The courts at Deacon's Walk were initially tennis courts, but are now 8 dedicated pickleball courts with portable nets.
While there was wind, it wasn't strong enough to blow the nets over, so that's a good day. The sun was shining, the players were smiling, and life was good.
Paddles up!
Just as we were leaving, we met the great and marvelous pickleball ambassador Harold Holeman. He was a valuable contact in seeing that we were aware of the possibilities of play in DE. The Diamond State Pickleball Club is blessed to have him guiding and directing pickleball in their community. I hope the city can provide some permanent nets. Harold took some time to listen to our story and get to know us. Thanks Harold for making us feel so special and making us honorary Diamond State Pickleball Club members.
The day before playing in Newark, we stopped by Delaware City and rode the Michael Castle Trail along the C&D canal to Chesapeake City and back for a total of 30 miles of bike riding. It was raining when we arrived in Delaware City, so we ate some pulled pork nachos at Edna's Kitchen & BBQ to let the clouds pass and the sun shine.
It was now off to Cherry Hill NJ where we would play later that day.
