Las Vegas NV #38 - What happens in Vegas ... Pickleball!

January 8, 2022

The weather was optimal for pickleball in Las Vegas.  Staying with friends Bruce and Amy in NV put us in a great location for also traveling to CA and UT. One of our self imposed rules for fulfilling our Pickleball The States adventure is to play with people we have never played with before, so Bruce and Amy arranged some play for us with others in their pickleball club. We played at the Sun City Summerlin Pickleball Courts which are private courts for this community.  There was also play at nearby Durango courts where open play is available to the public and we understand they have great pickleball players there as well. The courts at Sun City were almost always in use and the players are very skilled. What do you expect when they play every day? Our friend Bruce said that there are 314 days of sunshine in Vegas. Bruce matched us up with Russ and Keri who proved to be great opponents who also enjoy pickleball.

During our time in Las Vegas, we played several games with Bruce and Amy and their pickleball friends at the neighborhood Sun City Summerlin - Desert Vista Community Center Pickleball Courts. There were ten well maintained outdoor courts. We enjoyed many friendly and competitive games in the sun. Barb and Amy played in a ladies round robin on Sunday afternoon. Our skills were definitely put to the test by the players here, but we held our own. Outdoor pickleball year round is something to be envied. It sure beats the cold and snow we left back home.

Minutes away from where we were staying is Red Rock Canyon which has a cornucopia of trails to hike. Bruce and Amy belong to a local hiking club and hike twice a week with members of their club.

Bruce took us on a number of hikes including Calico Basin and trails off the Scenic Drive in Red Rock Canyon. In order to control the number of visitors, most days a reservation is required to be allowed into the Canyon. We hiked so much it's a wonder we had the strength to play pickleball. The main hike this particular day was to Calico Tanks. As we hiked the trail, we were constantly looking up in amazement at the beautiful geological sights all around.
